MMA welterweight Nate Diaz training for the traithlon prior to UFC 196

By Mike Cordero | Uncategorized

In a recent interview, Nate Diaz revealed that he was busy training for a triathlon prior to receiving the call from the UFC president Dana White regarding the opportunity to fight MMA featherweight champion Conor McGregor.

“On my worst day, I’ll train for two hours. I don’t have too many hobbies. I’m always working, always training. When I’m eating junk food and partying or whatever you want to call it, I’ll wake up, and I’ll train the next day. It’s been like that since I started. I think I train harder than the hardest workers in the offseason,” Diaz said.

Aside from this, Diaz somehow implied that when fighters don’t get the same publicity or support from the UFC, they need to work extra hard in order to get noticed.

“I’ve got to put in a lot of work, and there ain’t no push, so I’m going to make it mine. I know I’m a better fighter than him,” he said.

Due to the limited time given to Diaz to prepare for the MMA fight, the welterweight veteran wasn’t surprised that he received a lot of damage from McGregor. However, he was certain that it would take a bit time for him to warm him up.

The welterweight veteran also revealed that his game plan was the same as what he did to Kurt Pellegrino back in 2008- to push his opponent more during the second round of the fight.

“I usually don’t get touched by that (left hand), but I knew I was going to start off slow and pick up as I go,” Diaz said.

MMA Nate Diaz UFC 196It wasn’t only Diaz’s attack that changed after the fight is finished. Prior to the fight, Diaz threw some shade at McGregor for boasting his wealth to everybody and the support he gets from the MMA promotion. Now, Diaz somehow took back what he said and realized he really couldn’t blame McGregor for what he had done; McGregor simply took advantage of the opportunity.

“The guy did a great job. Like, if I’m getting all that, too, I’m like, ‘Sorry, everybody, you should have been at the right place, right time.’ I got the chance to take that right place, right time, and I took it as quickly as I could. Because if I passed it up, I was never going to get that,” he said.

After getting past the first round of the MMA fight, Diaz didn’t hesitate to grab the opportunity laid out to him. The result of the fight might have been a surprise for everyone, but he said that he knew he would win the fight even before stepping inside the cage. In fact, he knew that he would be getting the biggest break in his professional career through this fight.

“I was watching his fights, and I was like, he keeps his pressure, and these guys break. And that was the same pressure I keep, only less. The pressure that I put on these people, at a certain point, they just fall off. When you put the UFC roster on the mountain, these guys think they’re tough, and we all run up that mountain, I’ll bet you I’m going to be at the top of that mountain, and probably see my brother up there,” Diaz added.

Holly Holm wants an immediate rematch against new bantamweight MMA champ Miesha Tate

By Mike Cordero | Uncategorized

A lot of people are asking now former bantamweight MMA champ Holly Holm why she had to take the fight against Miesha Tate, instead of waiting for Ronda Rousey to come around and have a rematch.

Holm, however, said that she doesn’t want to wait too long in between the fights. And now that she has lost the MMA belt, Holm wants to have a rematch as soon as possible.

“I want to fight Miesha tomorrow. She’d want the same thing. She’s been around the sport a long time. I’m more anxious to get in and train right now than I have been in a long time. Before this fight, a lot of people asked, ‘Why are you taking this fight? You should wait for the rematch.” You know what? I’m in it to fight. That’s what I’m in it for. Tonight I made some mistakes and that’s all it comes down to. I need to fix those mistakes and I’m going to come back stronger,” Holm said.

MMA Holly Holm lossWhen asked about how she lost to Tate, here’s what she had to say about the new bantamweight champion:

“Miesha capitalized. I’ve said this from the beginning: she’s a scrapper. She can be behind in a fight and she can still finish and I let my guard down. It cost me the fight. It cost me the fight. So, the next thing I want to do is go in. I want to go back in the gym and get better. This is a whole different fight I had and I do feel like my whole MMA career has been on this fast course, which I love. I want the challenge. I wanted to take this challenge. I wanted to get back in there, I want a rematch or whoever they’ll set up a fight with. I want that. I’m here to fight,” Holm said.

As for what’s going to happen next, no one knows for sure at this time. All Holm knows is that she doesn’t want to wait for a long time to get into another fight. For the pro-boxing champ, competing on a regular basis is the best way to go for her.

“I’ll be training right away and I’ll take the fight as soon as they’ll give anything to me. It’s whatever opportunity they’ll give me right now. We’ll see where they want to go with this. I do want a rematch. Who doesn’t? If you’re at this point in your career, making this your career, it’s because you have passion for it. It’s because you have pride. It’s because you have that want for victory and that is what I want. The biggest thing that hurts right now is my heart. I just gotta get back in and work hard. I do want the rematch, but who’s to say they’ll give it to me right away? If I have to fight somebody else to get there, if I have to fight my way back, that’s OK, too, because I’m OK and I can put in the hard work to do that. I’m willing to do that. I’m ready to go as soon as they’re ready to give me a fight,” she added.

MMA champion Conor McGregor on losing at UFC 196: “I’ll take this loss like a man.”

By Mike Cordero | Uncategorized

UFC featherweight MMA champion Conor McGregor faced one of the most high-profile bouts of his entire career when he finally submitted to Nate Diaz’ rear-naked choke in the second round last Saturday.

Even though McGregor still has the featherweight belt, which he will likely need to defend according to Dana White, the epic loss against Nate Diaz symbolizes the first fatality of his soaring career and fast-growing stardom.

A lot of people are wondering whether this loss would change McGregor. It looks like the defeat isn’t enough to change McGregor on who he was.

MMA McGregor loss“I stormed in and put it all on the line. I took a shot and missed. I will never apologize for taking a shot. I’ll take this loss like a man. I will not shy away from it. I will not change who I am. If another champion goes up 2 weights let me know. If your tired of me talking money, take a nap. I’ll still be here when you wake up with the highest PPV and the gate. Still talking multi 7’s,” McGregor wrote.

27-year old McGregor was submitted at the 4:12 minute of the second round after Diaz rocked him on his feet, forcing him to throw a shot on the jiu-jitsu black belt. Diaz quickly took advantage of the opportunity and mounted McGregor from behind, and finishing the featherweight champ with punches and the choke.

McGregor now has a record of 19-3 while Diaz has a new record of 19-10.

“Thank you to the true support and f–k the hate that came out of the woodwork. I love it all. Its still steak for breakfast. I’ve been here many times in my life in some form or another. I’ll eat it all and come back stronger,” McGregor said.

As for those who are criticizing McGregor and rejoicing on his MMA loss, here’s what he had to say:

” [Jose] Aldo you are a pussy. [Rafael] Dos anjos you are a pussy. When the history books are written, I showed up. You showed up on Twitter. To the fans! Never ever shy away from challenges. Never run from adversity. Face yourself head on. Nate I will see you again,” McGregor said.

Wanderlei Silva chooses between two MMA promotions; wants to fight Fedor Emelianenko in the future

By Mike Cordero | Uncategorized

The NAC, or also known as Nevada Athletic Commission, has changed their verdict from lifetime ban to a 3-year suspension last February 17th. However, the Brazilian MMA fighter is looking into returning to the octagon sooner than May 2017.

“The possibility of being able to fight again means a lot to me. I was upset with everything, having to go to Supreme Court, going to the justice, lawyers, it all took my desire to fight away. I was upset with all that because I’m an idol, I’m recognized all over the world, and I want to be treated as such, not as an outlaw. The commission creates problems so they can come up with a solution. In my opinion, that’s completely wrong. They should review the whole statute and legislation, because that’s wrong,” Silva said.

MMA Wanderlei Silva Silva, who is claiming that he wasn’t licensed by the NAC when a someone dropped by his gym in Las Vegas to collect a urine sample, is now in the process of negotiating his contract with three MMA promotions. Silva said that he got a call from a promotion based in Chechnya, who appeared to be very interested in signing him up. However, it looks like Rizing Fighting Federation and Bellator MMA are the ones in the lead.

“I had a meeting with Nobuyuki Sakakibara, and he’s super interested in bringing me back to Japan, he said the Japanese are anxious to see me compete again. We’re also flirting with Bellator. They want to make a deal together so I can fight in Japan and here in the United States, and I would fight for both promotions. I’m negotiating an exhibition fight in Rizin on April 17. They offered me a jiu-jitsu match, two versus two. It would be Team Wanderlei, Andre Dida and I, against a team from Japan. I’m also negotiating a tournament in Japan, in which I would fight in September and come back in December for two fights in one night. That’s the plan for 2016. I really want to fight again in Japan. The Japanese promotion created Wanderlei Silva… I ended my career a while ago for disgust, not because I couldn’t do it physically or mentally, but for disgust. But I think this time off made me really like it again, and I’m really happy that I’m feeling this desire to fight again. Like I said, I’m in negotiation to come back to fighting in Japan and I really want big challenges,” Silva revealed.

Silva said that he is also looking into fighting Fedor Emelianenko again sometime in the future.

“There’s a possibility of fighting Fedor, who is an opponent I would really like to fight. I’m not just talking, but can’t be the first one, right? Now that I haven’t fought in two years, I can’t get him right away. I need to do some fights first, get my rhythm back, and when the promotion thinks it’s time and I feel I’m in a good rhythm, I would really want to test myself against him, for sure. I’ve fought the best in the world but him. I would really like to test myself against him. I don’t have anything against Fedor, but I would like to test myself and see how it goes,” he added.

Former MMA champion T.J. Dillashaw on Urijah Faber fighting Dominick Cruz for the title: “No, he doesn’t deserve it.”

By Mike Cordero | Uncategorized

Back when fallen MMA champions like Ronda Rousey, Cain Velasquez, and Chris Weidman got an immediate rematches after their respective title losses, T.J. Dillashaw is has to convince the executives to give him a second chance at fighting Dominick Cruz for the title that he lost.

Dominick Cruz won over T.J. Dillashaw by a split decision last January 17th in Boston, Massachusetts where the MMA fight was held. Prior to the fight, Cruz has widely expressed his desire to fight longtime rival Urijah Faber.

MMA Dillashaw“When you’re the champion you don’t have to talk s**t to push your way up to get that fight. There’s going to be plenty of guys talking their mouth off and making some drama to make it entertaining for them to get that title shot. Unfortunately, that’s the way the UFC is going to work. It’s all about money and promotion and entertaining. When you’re the champion, you don’t have to do that. Numbers are everything when it comes to this promotion. It’s not about who actually deserves the rematch. It’s all about the storyline and the drama behind it,” Dillashaw said during a recent interview with Submission Radio.

Both Faber and Dillashaw have been throwing shots at each for a couple months now because of the former MMA bantamweight champ’s exit from Team Alpha Male. Now that Faber is probably going to interfere with Dillashaw’s plan to get back inside the cage with Cruz, he isn’t going to hold back his thoughts about the issue just so he can put his case out there for the UFC execs to take notice.

“No, he doesn’t deserve it. He’s got a name behind him but his last performances? There’s no way he should deserve a title fight. Just because he and Cruz have beef? It doesn’t make sense. I’m the No. 1 contender. I felt I won that fight [with Cruz.] I think I’m the only UFC champ to lose his belt to a split decision. I don’t feel like Urijah’s done enough to get that fight. Obviously he’s going to try to talk his way into that fight but I don’t think he deserves it. The way he’s looked? The guy is a dinosaur. He hasn’t been looking very good. I feel like he’s going downhill,” Dillashaw said.

Faber’s only other loss aside from being knocked out by former MMA bantamweight champion Renan Barao back in 2013 was against Frankie Edgar. The fight ended in a unanimous decision after five rounds.

“Prime? No way. He’s good. Don’t get me wrong. The guy is awesome and I have a lot of respect for him, but I don’t think he’s been looking as good as he used to. He’s slowing down and not dominating guys. He had a tough fight with Francisco Rivera until he poked him in the eye. He didn’t look good against Alex Caceres until he choked him. He just beat the No. 13 guy in a very close fight and was gassed out in the process. I just don’t think he’s looked as dominant as he has in the past. He was a better fighter four years ago. He’s 37 years old. That’s old. I don’t want to be fighting when I’m 37 years old,” Dillashaw said.

Donald Cerrone gives credit to Alex Oliveira for accepting the MMA fight on a short notice

By Mike Cordero | Uncategorized

Just like what he did before, MMA veteran Donald Cerrone would like to deal with things as they come.

Going up against Alex Oliveira this coming Sunday at UFC Fight Night 83, which will be held in Pittsburgh, meant that Cerrone would be stepping inside the cage 15 pounds heavier that his usual weight in the lightweight division. Although this bout is his debut in the welterweight division, the Cowboy says he’s not against the plan of staying in the MMA welterweight nor going back to the lightweight division. He simply wants to face the situation when it happens.

MMA Cerrone vs Oliveira“I’m going to sit on the fence, just go back and forth [between 170 and 155] wherever they need me. It’s going to be a good time. These fights, to me, are awesome. I’m not on an eight-fight winning streak. I’m not worried about a title. I just go have fun. This fight is tailor-made for me, another stand-up guy who wants to go throw down. I have nothing to worry about, go make some money. Hell yeah,” Cerrone said during a recent interview last Friday at the open workouts.

And while he is used to fighting at the lightweight MMA division, the cowboy revealed some advantages of fighting in the heavier division.

“I’m [1]75 right now, and I had baby back ribs at TGI Fridays last night with mashed potatoes. It’s [the weight is] easy. It’s no problem. I don’t get much over [1]80 ever. I love it. I can eat, drink, whatever I want. You can see that I’m sweating. Normally I’m sucked up, looking like a concentration [camp] kid. It’s good,” Cerrone said.

Cerrone was actually supposed to go against Tim Means during the said event. Unfortunately, Means was pulled out of the fight because of a failed drug test. Oliveira went in and replaced Means so the main MMA event of the night could be saved.

For Cerrone, Oliveira’s willingness to accept the short notice invitation is really something. As one of the most active fighters on the UFC line up, Cerrone respects Oliveira’s gesture and he said that he is the type of person who gives credit to where it’s due.

“It was very noble of him to step up and take this fight on short notice, you know, not too many other dudes do that. So my hat’s off to the son of a b—h for sure. I think this fight’s going to be a stand-up fight. I heard that maybe he wants to take me down [but] that’s a bad idea on his part. I’m hoping to knock his ass out. That’s what I want. That’s what everyone wants to see,” Cerrone said.

MMA champ Marlon Moraes says he ‘begged’ World Series of Fighting officials to sign Aljamain Sterling

By Mike Cordero | Uncategorized

World Series of Fighting bantamweight MMA champ Marlon Moraes has openly admitted that he wants to fight someone in the higher ranked opposition. So as soon as the opportunity of going up against UFC contender like Aljamain Sterling happened, Moras said he tried his best to convice the WSOF management to sign “The Funk Master”.

“Not just told, but I begged (WSOF officials to sign Sterling) because I knew this guy is a big name. He’s a great fighter. He works very well for the promotion, and I think it was a smart move by the UFC, keeping him, because he can make a lot of noise in this division. He’s one of the guys I look up at, and it would be a pleasure having a guy like that on the roster, so I could be fighting a guy like this and prove where I belong,” Moraes revealed.

MMA Marlon MoraesAfter the highly publicized free agent period, Sterling revealed during his interview with The MMA Hour that he has decided to re-sign with the UFC. Sterling said that the promotion gave an offer that is better than what he had in the past. This decision, however, ended Moraes’ hope of fighting one of the best fighters in the division.

This event is actually expected, but nonetheless frustrating for Moraes. The 27-year-old, however, is slated to defend his title against MMA contender Joseph Barajas on Saturday at WSOF 28.

Moraes has a perfect record of 8-0 during his entire stay of WSOF run and is training under Mark Henry. Henry also trains top fighters like Frankie Edgar and Edson Barboza.

All in all, Moraes is one of the best bantamweight MMA fighters outside the UFC as of today. However, Moraes is searching for more interesting contenders as the quality of his contenders are not up to par with what he has to give inside the cage.

“Everybody knows where I belong. I have Frankie with me, and Frankie, man, in my opinion, is one of the best 145ers in the world. Training with him everyday is no joke, and I know I can fight with these guys. I want to put myself in deep waters. My coach always tells me, ‘man, when you fight with these guys who people think are going to be good (and) they’re going to beat you, that’s the best Marlon.’ And I want to take the best Marlon. I want to find the best Marlon. And I know to find that guy, I’ve got to fight with these guys, with these monsters. I’m going to become a monster when I fight with those monsters,” Moraes added.

Billy Corben never expected to see Kimbo Slice and Dada 5000 fight in MMA

By Mike Cordero | Uncategorized

A lot of people following the story of Dada 5000 and MMA veteran Kimbo Slice were definitely caught by surprise on last Wednesday’s event. Dada 5000, whose real name is Dhafir Harris, met his rival Kimbo Slice met and made a scene, as expected. The two barely allowed one another to speak and even threw ugly threats and curses.

“Listen, when you look at ignorant people, he’s at the top of my list. I think he called me a p***y n***a or something like that when he first came on. I wanted to get up right then and there. I really did, because I told him, I’m not scared of you. That’s just the difference between me and anybody that you’ve ever faced. I’m not scared of you. I’m going to test you from the crown of your head to the sole of your feet,” Dada 5000 said.

“He’s struck fear inside of a lot of guys. He tried to look at me in St. Louis (at Bellator Dynamite 1) with those bedroom eyes. Stop it, Ferg. I got a two-year-old niece that makes a scarier face than that. I’m here, and I’m not here by accident. We’re here to do damage. We’re here to put in work, man,” he added.

MMA dada 5000 kimbo slice2Billy Corben, the director of The U and Cocain Cowboys, has been following both MMA fighters since they started fighting in backyard brawls in Miami. Corben brought his crew to film the life of these fighters, getting all the escalations on record.

As expected, not too many studios agreed to publish the first film because of its violence. Yet somehow all fell into place and eventually had the film released. During the last few parts of the film, Dada 5000 was seen challenging Kimbo Slice into a fight. A few years later, Corben’s foresight eventually paid off because now, both fighter are finally meeting inside the MMA cage.

“It’s a little surreal. It’s like art imitating life a little bit. The truth of the matter is that we make documentaries. We make pop docs, and that isn’t just art. That is life. It’s weird, you do all of this and then it’s like, the last line of the movie basically says Dawg Fight 2 is Dada versus Kimbo. And here we are. There’s something cool about that, but there’s also something that, Dada gets very spiritual about it. That, sort of, the universe has responded to that,” Corben said.

“I don’t know if I believe in that, per se, but it’s definitely kind of like you get out of it what you put into it. Dada put that idea into the air, and then Dawg Fight brought that idea into the world, that people would like to see Kimbo fight Dada. And Bellator said, ‘s**t yeah, we want to see that fight!’ And it’s craziness. You have these legends of the game (Ken Shamrock and Royce Gracie) here fighting, and they’re like the most civil, gentlemen warriors. But everybody wants to know, ‘oh f**k, how can we press buttons,’ wanting to ask questions (to Harris and Slice) that would create more friction and fireworks. So it was funny to watch that happen, and if nothing else, I think we can all agree that it’s good television,” he added.

New MMA weight cutting policies are causing some trouble to promotions like Bellator

By Mike Cordero | Uncategorized

Now that there is another set of new weight-cutting policies for the MMA fighter, it looks like implementing the said policies would greatly affect MMA promotion companies like Bellator.

Scott Coker, the president of Bellator, has recently revealed he is concerned about the new and stricter policies on weight cutting and dehydration in California. He greatly concerned to the point the he not sure if bringing the a big-ticket fight in California in the future would be the best thing to do.

“I think that they’re reacting, but I think the consequences could be impacting, like how do you feel comfortable bringing a title fight here that has to make a certain weight on a certain date? It’s gonna be tough. They have their job to do, but we have our job to do as well,” Coker said.

MMA Scott CokerDuring the first few weeks of the month, the CSAC, or the California State Athletic Commission, has passed a new set of policies including emergency rules about extreme weight cutting in the MMA sport. The CSAC has recently banned IV rehydration, they extended the potential time between weight-ins and the scheduled bouts. They even imposed a stricter monitoring of dehydration which will be facilitated by the doctors on the fight day itself.

The last policy looks like what Coker is concerned the most. The Bellator president, who actually lives in San Jose, California and who often holds a good number of shows in the state, expressed his concerned about being put in a difficult position if in case a doctor decides to pull out the lined up MMA fighters at the 11th hour.

“I’m perfectly fine with what [CSAC executive officer Andy Foster is] implementing and I hope it’s something that can evolve. But as a promoter, if fighter X shows up, fighter Z shows up, we have national TV there — and then, oh, the fight is off? You’re .002 over [on the test] and the doctor says you can’t fight? It could be really problematic for us. I’m gonna talk to Andy about it. I’m sure it’ll all work out. It doesn’t mean we’ll stop promoting there, it’s just that we might not bring title fights or fights that you’re worried about somebody making weight,” Coker said.

CSAC chairman John Carvelli made it clear that the commission is not aiming for the demolition of the MMA sport. In fact, he said that the word ‘severe’ simply means that the doctor monitoring the fighters would determine who is and who is not fit to be in a bout. Furthermore, the CSAC will also be implementing specific gravity hydration exams on the fight day itself.

“For heaven’s sake, I hope that if a trained ringside physician sees signs of severe dehydration in one of these athletes that they will do something about it. That’s why they’re there. … I think these are simple things we’re doing that everyone hopefully can get on board with to avoid something dreadful happening to one of these great athletes, one of their athletes that they’re promoting and working with,” Carvelli clarified.

Tito Ortiz says Cris Cyborg would have beaten former MMA champ Ronda Rousey ‘Holly Holm-style’ if she was given the chance

By Mike Cordero | Uncategorized

In a recent interview, Tito Ortiz claimed that Cris Cyborg would have beaten former MMA champ Ronda Rousey too, but Holly Holm went first.

Ortiz, who is a Cyborg’s former manager and has been in her camp for a long time, says that he believes Cyborg can pull off the same thing as what pro-boxing champ Holly Holm did if Cyborg was just given a chance.

“Cris Cyborg is the pound-for-pound best woman in the world, I believe. Holly Holm did what Cris would have done to Ronda. Holly Holm got that chance. She’s a great woman champion. But Cris is one of the most vicious fighters in the world,” Ortiz said after Invicta FC 15 last Jan. 16.

MMA Ortiz CyborgBack in November, Holm was able to beat Rousey by a head-kick knockout in the second round of UFC 193. A bout between Cyborg and Rousey has been looked forward by everyone and was even tagged as the biggest event in the history of women’s MMA. Cyborg is currently fighting for Invicta, but she is under Zuffa by contract. Zuffa is the UFC’s parent company. The management said that Cyborg would be able to fight Rousey if she can make it to the 135-pound target weight.

Now Rousey is not the reigning bantamweight champion anymore, Cyborg’s future has been uncertain. The Invicta featherweight champ won over Daria Ibragimova by knock-out last Invicta 15, and has won over all her contenders for years. She has not been to decision since 2008, and has won over every fight for over a decade.

“She just attacks. There’s no woman fighter in the world like her at all. She’s bred to fight. She comes from Brazil and Brazilians are the toughest fighters in the world. She loves this. This is fun for her,” Ortiz said.

Some would say that Cyborg is the best dominant MMA fighter in the entire industry. However, determining who would fight next is the big question for her. Shannon Knapp, the president of Invicta revealed, however, that she is looking into getting Cyborg a contender that is qualified for him. Knapp said that she is looking into a superfight between Cyborg and Tonya Evinger, who is the Invicta bantamweight champ. Ortiz said that Cyborg just needs to get patient and prepare for any fight.

“Just keep giving her fights as the UFC did with Ronda. Ronda just kept getting fights, getting fights. The other girls huff and puff and scream and yell. Those are the ones that are the weakest, but they look good for pay-per-view, they look good for interviews. When it’s fight time, Holly Holm, Ronda Rousey, Cris Cyborg are at the top of the world. The rest of the women are looking up at them,” Ortiz added.
